Keeping Your Mac Safe From Threats

"Macs don't get viruses" - you've probably heard that. It's not quite true anymore. While Macs are generally safer than Windows PCs, they're not immune. Here's what you should know.

Warning Signs Something's Wrong

Pop-ups everywhere. If you're seeing ads pop up even when your browser is closed, or your homepage keeps changing, something unwanted got installed.

Browser acting weird. New toolbars appearing, searches redirecting to strange sites, or your browser running unusually slow are all red flags.

Apps you didn't install. Check your Applications folder. See anything you don't recognize? Be careful - some malware disguises itself with boring-sounding names.

What You Can Do Right Now

Check your browser extensions. In Safari, go to Safari > Settings > Extensions. In Chrome, type chrome://extensions in the address bar. Remove anything you don't recognize or need.

Review Login Items. Go to System Settings > General > Login Items. Remove anything suspicious that's starting when your Mac boots up.

Keep macOS updated. Apple regularly patches security holes. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update and stay current.

Be skeptical. The biggest threat isn't sophisticated hackers - it's tricking you into installing something. Never download software from pop-up ads, and be wary of email attachments.

The Bigger Picture

Good security is really about good habits. Along with keeping your Mac clean, make sure you have solid backups (ransomware is a thing), use strong passwords, and consider a password manager.

When to Get Professional Help

If you're seeing scary warnings demanding payment, your Mac is seriously sluggish even after basic cleanup, or you just want peace of mind - don't hesitate to ask for help. Some infections are tricky to fully remove.
