Getting Your New Mac Set Up Right
Just got a new Mac? Congratulations! Whether you're coming from an old Mac or switching from Windows, here's how to get started on the right foot.
First Things First
Sign in with your Apple ID. This connects your iCloud, App Store purchases, and lets you use features like Find My Mac. If you don't have one, you can create it during setup.
Run Software Update. Even brand-new Macs often have updates waiting. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update and install anything available.
Set up Time Machine right away. Before you do anything else, set up a backup. It only takes a few minutes and protects everything going forward.
Moving From an Old Mac
Apple's Migration Assistant makes this surprisingly painless:
Option 1: Direct transfer. Put both Macs on the same Wi-Fi, open Migration Assistant on both, and follow the prompts. It moves everything - files, apps, settings, even your desktop background.
Option 2: Time Machine backup. If your old Mac is already gone, you can restore from a Time Machine backup during the new Mac's setup.
Option 3: Manual setup. Sometimes a fresh start is nice. Just sign in with your Apple ID and your iCloud stuff syncs automatically. Then reinstall apps as you need them.
A Few Settings Worth Checking
Once you're set up, take a few minutes to explore System Settings. A few things worth looking at:
- Turn on FileVault encryption (Security & Privacy)
- Set up Hot Corners if you like them (Desktop & Dock)
- Adjust trackpad gestures to your liking (Trackpad)
- Set up Find My Mac for security
